Patented Electronic Differential: The Science of Stability

One of the greatest engineering challenges in designing a three-wheel vehicle is cornering. When a vehicle turns, the outer wheel travels a longer distance than the inner wheel. If both wheels are forced to spin at the same speed, the vehicle will “scrub” the tires, lose traction, or in extreme cases, tip over. In the automotive world, this is solved by heavy mechanical gears. In the world of micromobility, EZGlyd has solved it with a patented electronic differential.

This smart software-hardware integration is the “brain” behind our vehicle’s superior handling. It actively manages the power distribution to the rear wheels, ensuring that riders stay safe, stable, and in control—even when navigating sharp city corners with a full load of cargo.

What is an Electronic Differential?

A traditional mechanical differential is a heavy, complex set of gears that allows wheels to rotate at different speeds. While effective for cars, it adds unnecessary weight and maintenance points to a lightweight electric vehicle.

The EZGlyd electronic differential replaces these heavy gears with intelligent code and dual-motor control. By continuously monitoring the steering angle and speed, our system instantly calculates the optimal rotation speed for each rear wheel. It sends more power to the outer wheel and less to the inner wheel during a turn, allowing the vehicle to pivot smoothly rather than fighting against the pavement.

Why It Matters for Safety

Safety is the primary barrier to adoption for micromobility. Many generic electric trikes lack this technology, making them prone to tipping during high-speed turns.

Preventing the “Tip-Over” Effect

Without a differential, a solid-axle trike resists turning. The rider has to fight the handlebars, and the centrifugal force can lift the inner wheel off the ground. Our electronic differential eliminates this resistance. It facilitates the turn, keeping all three wheels firmly planted on the ground. This stability is critical for delivery riders carrying heavy, high-mounted cargo boxes that raise the center of gravity.

Superior Traction on Wet Roads

Urban environments are unpredictable. Oil slicks, wet cobblestones, and painted crosswalks can cause loss of traction. Our system functions similarly to a modern car’s traction control. If the electronic differential detects that one wheel is slipping (spinning too fast without grip), it instantly reduces power to that wheel and redirects torque to the wheel with grip. This ensures that the rider maintains forward momentum and directional control, even in adverse weather.

Engineering Insight: According to Car and Driver, differential technology is the single most important factor in vehicle handling dynamics, distinguishing high-performance vehicles from basic transport. Electronic vs. Mechanical: The EZGlyd Advantage

Why did we choose an electronic solution over a mechanical one? The answer lies in efficiency and reliability.

  • Weight Reduction: By removing the heavy metal gearbox of a mechanical differential, we reduce the vehicle’s overall weight. This translates to longer battery range and easier handling for the user.

  • Zero Maintenance: Mechanical gears require oil, seals, and eventual replacement due to wear. Our electronic differential is software-driven. It doesn’t wear out, doesn’t leak oil, and doesn’t require servicing.

  • Smart Adaptability: Software can be updated. As we gather data from our fleets, we can refine the differential algorithms to be even smoother and more responsive, upgrading your fleet over the air.

Integration with Regenerative Braking

Our stability system works hand-in-hand with our braking technology. When the rider releases the throttle, the system reverses the polarity to recharge the battery. The electronic differential manages this braking force independently for each wheel, preventing fishtailing during sudden stops.

Protected Innovation

This technology is a core part of EZGlyd’s intellectual property portfolio. It represents years of R&D and testing to perfect the algorithms that keep our riders safe. When you choose EZGlyd, you aren’t just buying a scooter; you are investing in a patented safety platform.
